'Cleaning – More Than Just a Tidy Home
A clean home isn't just visually pleasing. Psychologists have found that tidying and cleaning can provide a mental break from worries and intrusive thoughts. The repetitive, purposeful movements can be soothing and calming, while the physical activity involved can burn approximately 100–200 calories per hour'.
The British Psychological Society (BPS) – The mental health benefits of spring cleaning, 15 April 2026.
'Laundry – Small Change, Big Saving
Switching your washing machine temperature down by just 10 degrees (from 40°C to 30°C) can save almost 40% in energy costs per load. And for most everyday washes, 30°C gets the job done just as well'.
Dr Xand van Tulleken on BBC Morning Live – via The Express, 24 June 2025.
'Ironing – Surprisingly Relaxing
Ironing might be the ultimate unexpected stress buster. Research by Hilton Garden Inn found that 72% of Brits say ironing is their greatest simple pleasure, citing its strangely therapeutic qualities. Almost half (44%) love the satisfying smooth of creases, while 43% enjoy the permission to stand still, coupled with the repetitive motion of the iron'.
Hilton Garden Inn – Move Over Meditation. Brits are Ironing to De stress, November 2018.
